Even before the first Academy Award envelope opens Sunday night, "American Sniper" already has achieved levels of critical and commercial success rarely matched by any movie, especially those with a military subject.
"Sniper" is up for six Academy Awards, including Best Picture. One of eight nominees in the category, its box-office take is more than the other seven pictures combined and would be the most for any winner since "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" in 2003.
But while the ticket sales, industry praise, real-life courtroom drama and celebrity bickering have helped "Sniper" make an impact on the national consciousness, we got to thinking: What military movies have made an impact on you?
Military Times wants to hear about your unheralded military movie favorites: A long-lost classic or an underappreciated modern marvel. A realistic look at combat or an escapist shoot-'em-up. The movie you can't click past when it's on cable, that you recommend to everyone in your unit at every chance you get, that you still can't believe isn't required viewing for service members everywhere.
Send your recommendations to milmovies@militarytimes.com by Oscar night. Your suggestions could be used in an upcoming Military Times piece.
