On the strength of a perfect pole-vaulting season, Army Reserve 1st Lt. Sam Kendricks was voted USA Track and Field’s top male athlete for 2017.
Kendricks, who won the pole vaulting world title in London in August with a leap of 5.95 meters, went 17-0 in competitions in 2017. He took third in the pole vault last year at the Rio Olympics.
World steeplechase champion Emma Coburn was named USA Track and Field’s top female athlete. The winners were determined by a media and fan vote; they will be honored at a Dec. 2 banquet in Columbus, Ohio.
Kendricks, of Oxford, Mississippi, received added attention during his Rio performance for dropping his pole mid-run during a qualifying round and standing for the U.S. national anthem.
