A soldier assigned to the 7th Infantry Division was found dead Wednesday in his off-post residence, officials announced Thursday evening.

Maj. Robert Hockman, 46, of Memphis, Tennessee, served as a knowledge management officer on the 7th Infantry Division staff at Joint Base Lewis-McChord in Washington.

Hockman enlisted in the Army in 2002 and commissioned as a field artillery officer in 2008. He had been with the 7th Infantry Division since July 2018.

His awards and decorations include the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Army Commendation Medal, the Army Achievement Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Afghanistan Campaign Medal and the Iraq Campaign Medal.

“The Bayonet Division is saddened by this tragic loss of a valued member of our team,” said Col. Kyle Marsh, the 7th Infantry Division chief of staff, in a statement. “Our sincerest condolences go out to his family and friends.”

His death is under investigation by local authorities, officials said.
