Back in May, officers responded to a late night call about an unconscious woman found lying in the road on Auburn University’s campus in Alabama.

On Monday, they arrested a soldier from the 75th Ranger Regiment who is stationed an hour’s drive away at Fort Benning, Georgia.

Spc. Alexander Hernandez, 23, is facing a charge of first-degree rape, according to a Wednesday release from the Auburn Police Department.

“An investigation began to determine how the victim came to be discovered unresponsive and to determine if she may have been sexually assaulted,” after she was taken to an emergency room, the release said. “Further investigation, including DNA examination by the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, determined that Alexander Hernandez, an acquaintance of the victim, sexually assaulted her.”

Hernandez turned himself in to police and is being held on $100,000 bond at the Lee County Jail, the release said.

“We take allegations of potential criminal activity seriously,” 75th Ranger Regiment spokeswoman Tracy Bailey told Army Times. “The Regiment is cooperating fully with local law enforcement’s investigation.”

Hernandez is a member of the the Regimental Military Intelligence Battalion, Bailey said, and has been with the unit less than a year.
