WEST POINT, N.Y. — The U.S. Military Academy is welcoming a new class of more than 1,200.
Monday is reception day, or R-Day, at West Point. New arrivals are fitted for military clothing, given haircuts and start learning how to march and toe a line.
The reception kicks off six weeks of rigorous Cadet Basic Training, after which they will be formally accepted into the Corps of Cadets. The Acceptance Day Parade for the Class of 2022 is scheduled for Aug. 18.
The incoming class includes 294 women and 400 minorities.
The training comes after a federal watchdog said the Pentagon failed to train and guide troops about partisan political activities before campaign season.
More than 1 million disability claims related to military toxic exposure have been approved in the first two years of the veterans benefits legislation.
NASCAR is joining other big brands, including the National Football League, Microsoft and Walmart, to help a campaign to enlist veterans as poll workers.
