ROCKFORD, Ill. — Authorities say an Illinois National Guard medic from Elgin died when the military ambulance he was in crashed near Rockford.
The Illinois National Guard says 30-year-old Sgt. Marcos Leonardo Gudino was in a military ambulance that was part of convoy of vehicles returning on Interstate 90 from weekend training at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin, on Sunday. National Guard officials say the ambulance driver suffered serious injuries and was in stable condition. Illinois State Police are investigating the accident.
Gudino was assigned to Headquarters Co., 1st Battalion, 178th Infantry Regiment based in Chicago. He enlisted in August 2010.
Gudino’s father, Frank Gudino, told the Daily Herald that his son was hoping to soon start a job as a police officer in Streamwood. Relatives remembered Gudino as a friendly and happy person.
