A Fort Riley soldier was found dead with an apparent gunshot wound to the head inside a vehicle near Milford Lake, Kansas, on March 18, according to Capt. Brian Hornaday of the Geary County Sheriff’s Office.

Spc. Ronald Church Jr., 23, was a Bradley fighting vehicle system maintainer with the 541st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 1st Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade.

“Words cannot even begin to express the sorrow of the 541st CSSB as we learn of Spc. Ronald Church Jr.’s passing,” said Col. Jay J. McGuire, commander of the 1st Infantry Division Sustainment Brigade, in a press release. “Our thoughts and support will be with his family during this difficult time.”

Church, of Forest Park, Georgia, joined the Army in November 2015.

He had been stationed at Fort Riley since February 2017, according to Army officials, who said he had not deployed.

His awards and decorations include the Army Service Ribbon and the National Defense Service Ribbon.

There is no reason to suspect foul play, Hornaday told Army Times. The incident is under investigation.
