An Army truck carrying more than 1,000 gallons of fuel drove off a road Sunday, spilling an undetermined amount of JP-8 onto Richardson Highway, according to a Tuesday release from U.S. Army Alaska.

No one was injured in the accident, and first responders from local, state and military organizations were able to contain the spill, the release said.

“Officials from Fort Wainwright, in conjunction with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation, are now in the process of assessing the environmental impacts of the spill,” the release said.

The kerosene-based fuel is used to power both vehicles and aircraft.

The truck was traveling along Richardson Highway in a group, about 55 miles away in a return trip to Fort Wainwright, after fueling up vehicles at Exercise Arctic Eagle.

The damaged vehicle was recovered on Monday afternoon, the release said, and the cause of the incident is under investigation.
