The U.S. Army opened its largest dental clinic on Tuesday at Camp Humphreys, South Korea, Stars and Stripes reported.
The new Carius Dental Clinic has 79 treatment rooms to provide care for 20,000 soldiers and dependents, the 65th Medical Brigade said in a statement.
"This building represents a promise, a partnership with the Republic of Korea," said Col. Jae Hwang, the 618th Dental Company commander, at a ceremony Tuesday.
The $20.3 million, 40,000-square-foot clinic had been under construction for five years because of the delayed relocation of U.S. forces in South Korea, but today, "this clinic has the latest and greatest equipment," Sgt. 1st Class April Scales, the clinic's enlisted chief, said in the Stars and Stripes report. "It's the largest facility in the Army."
The clinic is part of a facilities expansion at Camp Humphreys to prepare for more personnel to be located there.
The dental clinic is named for Maj. Marvin Carius, a dentist with the 25th Infantry Division who was killed during the battle of Chosin Reservoir. He was responsible for converting a truck into a dental clinic to treat troops at the front line of the Korean War, Stars and Stripes reported.
