Local authorities on Wednesday evening evacuated an apartment complex about eight miles from Fort Polk, Louisiana, as they investigate an incident involving a possible hazardous material.
In a Facebook post, the Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office wrote that is it working with Fort Polk officials and the FBI "regarding an incident that took place today within the parish."
Meanwhile, on Fort Polk, military authorities are investigating a suspicious-looking vehicle after two soldiers reported it.
It's unclear if the two incidents are related.
According to the sheriff's office, residents of the Mona Lisa Apartments in New Llano and the immediate surrounding area have been evacuated as a precaution.
"The evacuation took place due to the possibility that a hazardous material may have been involved in the incident," the sheriff's office said in its statement.
The vehicle on Fort Polk was parked near the library and education center around lunch time, said Kim Reischling, a spokeswoman for the post.
As of 7 p.m., police were still on the scene, Reischling said, adding that the area was cordoned off.
"What it is, if it's anything, is still under investigation," she said.
