FORT CAMPBELL — Searchers continued Monday to look for a 101st Airborne Division soldier who was swept away while crossing Little West fork Creek on Fort Campbell Friday.

The soldier has not been identified.

"The soldier was at the water crossing with two other soldiers from his unit before being swept away," according to a Public Affairs Office news release sent out Monday afternoon.

The release said a search and recovery effort was underway for a soldier "who was swept away by strong currents Friday evening at the low water crossing over Little West Fork Creek on Fort Campbell."

The Leaf-Chronicle first reported Friday that the Montgomery County Water Rescue Squad had been asked to assist in the search of Ringgold Creek for a person who fell into the water on base at about 5:45 p.m.Friday. Emergency Management Director Director Jerry Buchanan said the waterway is the same but goes by both names.

The creek had been swollen by heavy rains from severe storms Thursday and on Friday night another strong storm forced the search to be called off temporarily, Buchanan said.

He said Montgomery County Water Rescue Squad had not been called back again to assist in the search.

Multiple civilian and military agencies are currently working to locate the soldier and the incident was under investigation, according to the news release.

This story will be updated as information becomes available.
