A Fort Hood soldier who deployed twice to support operations in Iraq was found dead at his off-post home on Tuesday, the Texas installation announced Thursday.

Staff Sgt. Steven Daniel Lewis, 33, lived in nearby Killeen and had been assigned to to 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, at Fort Hood since December 2013. His death is under investigation, according to a Fort Hood news release; further details were not provided.

Lewis deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (November 2008-September 2009) and Operation New Dawn (December 2010-October 2011) as part of a military career that spanned 14 years and two services, the release states. He joined the Navy in January 2002, then entered the Army in May 2007 as an intelligence analyst.

He earned two Army Commendation Medals, good-conduct awards from both the Army and Navy, a Navy submarine warfare insignia, and expert marksmanship badges with both the pistol and recoilless rifle, among other awards and decorations.

Lewis' death is the third announced this month by the Texas installation. Staff Sgt. Brian Michael Reed was found dead in his off-post residence March 14, and Sgt. Sean McGregor Vanderwal died in a March 6 automobile accident.
