WWII Army vet inducted into French Legion of Honor

HAVERHILL, Mass. — A Massachusetts man has been inducted into the French Legion of Honor for his service during World War II.

Ray Jenkins of Haverhill received the award on Dec. 10. It is the highest decoration bestowed by France.

Jenkins served in the U.S. Army during World War II, earning the Purple Heart and the European African Middle-Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon.

He was one of the first soldiers to arrive in Normandy and set up communications before the invasion. He received serious injuries while serving in France during a mission to deliver a message to General George Patton.

The award was announced by U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas, D-Massachusetts.
