TICONDEROGA, N.Y. — Fort Ticonderoga is hosting a living history event to commemorate what was known during the Revolutionary War as the "noble train" of artillery.
Two-hundred-forty years ago, bookseller-turned-soldier Henry Knox wrote to Gen. George Washington, telling him how difficult it would be to haul heavy artillery from New York's Fort Ticonderoga to Boston in the middle of winter.
A month after writing the letter, Knox and his soldiers dispatched tons of ordnance to the general. The eventual positioning of the cannons on Dorchester Heights, Massachusetts, overlooking Boston's harbor forced the British to evacuate the city on St. Patrick's Day in 1776.
Fort Ticonderoga's living history event is Dec. 5, the 240th anniversary of Knox's letter to Washington. The program will include demonstrations of how oxen and horses were used to haul cannons on wooden sleds.
