Police in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, arrested a soldier wanted for desertion Thursday after the man had barricaded himself in a hotel room for hours.
Spc. Joseph Russell Miller, 29, will not face local charges stemming from the incident, according to WCSH-6 TV and other local media reports, but remained in Rockingham County Jail as of Friday afternoon awaiting transfer to Army officials. He surrendered peacefully, and no injuries were reported.
Miller was arrested Sunday by police from nearby Stratham on drunken-driving and firearms charges, including carrying a handgun without a permit. Concerns stemming from that arrest led police to respond in force to Thursday's incident, steering the public away from the hotel when they were called to arrest Miller on his outstanding desertion warrant.
A SWAT team was called in during the standoff, Seacoastonline.com reported, but Miller gave up without incident and was taken to an area hospital for injuries that took place before the standoff.
A Stratham Police report lists Miller as a San Antonio resident and says he was released on $1,500 bail following the Sunday arrest.
Army Human Resources Command provided Miller's rank Friday afternoon but could not immediately provide any additional details on his service.
