A 51-year-old Army Contracting Command officer was found dead of an apparent gunshot wound in his Redstone Arsenal, Alabama, residence Saturday, according to an ACC news release. Foul play is not suspected.
Col. Richard L. Shepard had served as the command's deputy chief of staff for human capital since September 2013, according to the Monday release. Shepard entered service in 1986 and deployed to Iraq in 2012, supporting the Office of Security Cooperation.
His awards and decorations include a Bronze Star Medal, Defense Superior Service Medal and Parachutist Badge, among other honors.
In a December 2013 "Spotlight" piece, Shepard told ACC public affairs that he was married to a retired Army officer and had two sons.
AL.com reported the incident on Monday. Shepard's death remains under investigation, according to the news release.
