WASHINGTON — Senate committees will vote on President Donald Trump’s nominee to be Secretary of State, meet his nominee to be Secretary of Veterans Affairs and grill his Secretary of Defense in a series of high-profile hearings this week.

On Monday, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will decide whether to forward Mike Pompeo’s nomination for the top State Department post to the full Senate in what is expected to be a divided, partisan vote.

Two days later, the Senate Veterans’ Affairs Committee will welcome White House physician Ronny Jackson for his confirmation hearing, with an eye towards another possible contentious partisan vote next month.

Meanwhile, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis has two appointments on Capitol Hill this week to defend the president’s fiscal 2019 budget request: on Wednesday, before the House Appropriations Committee, and on Thursday, before the Senate Armed Services Committee.

The moves come as the House Armed Services Committee releases its first drafts of the annual defense authorization bill, which helps set budget levels and priorities for next fiscal year.
