If you’ve decided to go the personally procured move route for your next change of station, you’ll want to find ways to trim costs so you can keep as much of your reimbursement check as possible.

Two nationwide moving-truck chains offer military discounts, making them good places to start when you’re getting ready to pack. That said, costs can vary based on location, availability and any number of other factors, so it’s good to price out as many competitors as possible. Some chains could offer seasonal or regional specials that make up for any military-only offers from other companies.

Here’s the basics on two online do-it-yourself deals:

Budget Truck Rental: Service members save 20 percent off their truck rental if they’re moving on military orders. Blackout dates do apply; you’ll need to enter your information here to find out what your savings will be.

Penske: Service members don’t need to be moving on military orders to qualify for a rental discount, but it’s a two-part process: A 10 percent savings on the online booking, and another 10 percent off by showing military identification when picking up the rental. The company also staffs a military-only helpline, available to service members and veterans, at 1-844-487-6677. Get more details here.

Have a bigger move planned? You may be able to save big with Allied or North American Van Lines if you’re an American Legion member: Details on those deals here.
