A member of the class of 2019 at the United States Military Academy has been sentenced to 21 years in prison for sexually assaulting a fellow cadet in 2016, according to a West Point release.
Jacob Whisenhunt, who was charged with three counts of sexual assault in July 2016, will also be dismissed from the Army, the release said.
"This verdict and sentence represents the integrity of a process that includes strong victim support systems, thorough investigative efforts with collaboration among the investigators, the staff judge advocate and the special victims prosecutors to move a case to court-martial," academy spokesman Lt. Col. Christopher Kasker said in a statement. "In this case the court-martial resulted in a sentence that reflects the seriousness of the crimes of sexual assault and rape."
The charges stemmed from a field training exercise last summer, the Times-Herald Record, in Middletown, New York, reported Monday.
