A soldier who also is a corrections officer at Edinburgh Correctional Facility in Indiana is facing charges of sexual misconduct for allegedly having a sexual encounter with an inmate, according to WTTV, the local CBS affiliate.
Sgt. Heather Sinnett is accused of having sex with inmate Brad Gullege and becoming pregnant, according to the TV station.
According to FOX59 and the Daily Journal, officials said Sinnett was in charge of escorting inmates at the Edinburgh Correctional Facility, a state-run minimum security facility located on Camp Atterbury's campus. That's what she was doing with Gullege when they had sex in a mop closet, Gullege told police.
The Indiana Department of Corrections began investigating Sinnett last year, and the state investigator reviewed emails and phone calls between Sinnett and Gullege. The pair discussed Sinnett's pregnancy during those calls and emails, according to the Daily Journal.
Investigators said Gullege was imprisoned for dealing meth for about 11 days before his encounter with Sinnett; he received an eight-year sentence, said WISH-TV.
Court documents showed several emails with Sinnett telling Gullege she was waiting for him to get out so they could care for "their" baby together, according to FOX59.
Sinnett on Dec. 12 told the Army she was pregnant. She faces up to six years in prison, according to WISH-TV. She refused an interview with investigators, but claimed the act was consensual.
"People place great trust in people who oversee and supervise IDOC inmates, and any time somebody betrays that trust or takes advantage of it for their own personal satisfaction…it is very serious," Johnson County Deputy Prosecutor Alex Hamner said.
