A soldier with the 1st Infantry Division who died Saturday has been identified as Pfc. Luis Ortiz.
Ortiz lost consciousness while running June 27 in Junction City, Kansas, according to information released Tuesday by the Army. He was hospitalized at Salina Regional Health Center in Salina, Kansas, where he died three days later.
Ortiz, 24, was a UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter repairer with D Company, 3rd Assault Helicopter Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment, 1st Combat Aviation Brigade.
"It's never easy to lose a member of your family," said Lt. Col. Jennifer Reynolds, Ortiz's battalion commander, in a statement. "Our soldiers are our family, and we extend our deepest sympathies and support to the family and friends of Pfc. Ortiz."
Ortiz joined the Army in June 2015, arriving at Fort Riley, Kansas, in January.
His awards include the National Defense Service Medal. He had not been deployed overseas.
