About 500 soldiers from the 3rd Cavalry Regiment will deploy to Afghanistan later this summer, officials announced.
The soldiers from 2nd Squadron, 3rd Cavalry Regiment, stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, are scheduled to deploy in the August or September timeframe. Their deployment is part of the regular rotation of forces
"Sabre Squadron joins the 3rd Cavalry Regiment in answering our nation's call," said Maj. Gen. John Thomson, commander of the 1st Cavalry Division, in a statement. "Sabre troopers are undeniably ready for this key mission."
The soldiers from 2nd Squadron will join about 1,000 other soldiers from 3rd Cavalry Regiment in Afghanistan. The Army announced that deployment in March.
Also deploying, as previously announced, are about 500 soldiers from the 1st Cavalry Division headquarters and the division's Sustainment Brigade. These soldiers are slated to replace the 10th Mountain Division headquarters at Bagram Airfield as the National Support Element. They also will take responsibility for Train, Advise and Assist Command-East.
