Pulaski County Sheriff Ron Long said Tuesday that authorities had found the body of a fifth international soldier from Fort Leonard Wood who was killed in the weekend flooding.
Long said a sedan carrying the soldiers was swept off the road by floodwaters on U Highway on Saturday evening. The sheriff said Sunday that four bodies had been discovered, but authorities believed another man might have been in the car.
At about 11:30 a.m. on Tuesday, the fifth body was discovered after a "massive search," according to Long.
Long said a trooper in a Missouri State Highway Patrol helicopter spotted the body Tuesday morning in Tavern Creek, about six miles downstream from where the car was initially swept off the road.
Long said the identities of the soldiers are not yet being released because the State Department is still notifying family members.
All five men were on temporary assignment at Fort Leonard Wood for training at the time of the incident, according to Long.
Long said Pulaski County sheriff's deputies were helped in the search by the Missouri State Highway Patrol, the Crocker Fire Department, the Crocker Police Department, the Pulaski County Coroner's Office and the Waynesville Rural Fire Department.
Officials say the weekend flooding is responsible for at least 11 deaths across the state.
