A 25-year-old soldier stationed at Fort Knox, Kentucky, was struck and killed by a car in Clarksville, Tennessee, on Tuesday while undergoing training at nearby Fort Campbell.
Sgt. Kenneth Ronald Berry attempted to cross U.S. Route 79 on foot "for an unknown reason," according to a Clarksville Police Department news release, causing the driver of an oncoming SUV to swerve in an attempt to avoid him. The maneuver was unsuccessful; police responded to the scene at 12:33 on Tuesday morning and Berry was airlifted to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Berry, with 42nd Clearance Company, 19th Engineer Battalion, enlisted in 2010 and had served at Fort Knox since October 2013, according to information provided by a Fort Knox spokesman. The Parkersburg, West Virginia, native deployed to Afghanistan for a year beginning in October 2011. His awards and decorations include an Army Commendation Medal and two Army Achievement Medals.
The spokesman could not immediately address the type of training Berry was undergoing at Fort Knox.
