Spc. Gage Matthew-Gilbert Schellin of Fort Hood, Texas, died Sunday from an apparent gunshot wound, post officials announced Tuesday afternoon.
He was apparently wounded at his home off post in Killeen. The circumstances of his death are under investigation, Fort Hood officials said in a release.
Schellin, 22, was a field artillery firefinder radar operator assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 3rd Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division at Fort Hood.
He entered service in May 2012, and had been with 2nd BCT since August, officials said.
His home of record is listed as Fort Walton Beach, Florida.
Schellin was deployed to Afghanistan from July 2013 to March this year.
His awards include the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with campaign star, Army Good Conduct Medal, NATO Medal and Army Service Ribbon.
