A Fort Benning soldier died on Saturday from gunshot wounds, according to the Ledger-Enquirer in Georgia.
Spc. Donald Matthews, 26, was pronounced dead of multiple gunshot wounds at 6:36 a.m., the newspaper reported.
Police were called at 1:51 a.m. to a report of gunshots at an intersection in Columbus about 11 miles north of the Army post.
Matthews, a human resources specialist, was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 11th Infantry Regiment at Fort Benning. He joined the Army in May 2012 and deployed to Afghanistan from June 2013 to March 2014, according to Army Human Resources Command.
His awards include the Army Commendation Medal and Army Achievement Medal.
The incident is under investigation.
