A 42-year-old officer who deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan during an 11-year Army career was found dead Thursday of an apparent gunshot wound near Fort Hood, Texas, base officials said in a Saturday news release.
Capt. Jonathan Nyle Muniz served with Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, at Fort Hood since January 2012, the release states.
No further details of Muniz's death were released; the incident is under investigation.
Muniz, of Rocky Ford, Colorado, entered service in 2003 and was commissioned into the Army Medical Specialist Corps the following year, according to the release.
His first war-zone deployment came in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (January 2005-January 2006); he deployed to Afghanistan from May 2010 to April 2011.
He earned a Bronze Star Medal and Defense Meritorious Service Medal among other awards and decorations, the release states, including air assault and parachutist badges
