Two soldiers from the 10th Mountain Division were involved in a car accident near Fort Polk, Louisiana.
Spc. William Rhodes, 22, was killed, and Sgt. Alejandro Galvan was injured on Thursday.
Rhodes was an infantry rifleman with 2nd Battalion, 2nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, which has its headquarters at Fort Polk.
He joined the Army in October 2015 and was assigned to the 10th Mountain Division following Basic Combat Training and Advanced Individual Training, according to an Army news release.
Rhodes’ awards and decorations include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, the National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family of Specialist Rhodes,” Col. Jose Rivera, rear provisional commander of the 3rd BCT, said in the release. “Specialist Rhodes will truly be missed by all of us.”
Galvan, who was injured in the accident, is an infantry team leader in the same unit as Rhodes.
The sergeant was treated and released from the hospital on Saturday, according to the release.
